Dr. Gary Horndeski, Bellesoma Method Specialist, on Abdominal Surgery

Dr. Gary Horndeski, a Bellesoma Method specialist, has been practicing plastic surgery since the 1980s. He attended medical school at Case Western Reserve University. During a fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, he decided to remain in the Houston area. As part of his residency, he learned about reconstructive abdominal surgery that used mesh to reinforce the abdominal wall.

When he returned to performing tummy tucks as part of his plastic surgery practice, he continued to use mesh to help reinforce the fascia of the abdominal wall. Traditional tummy tucks sutured the left and right abdominal fascia without any reinforcement. As he followed up with tummy tuck patients, Horndeski noticed that these same patients tended to lose excess belly fat and eat less.

Intrigued by these results, he researched the effect of increased pressure on the stomach and the sensation of fullness after eating. He determined that, by reinforcing the abdomen with mesh, pressure was put on the stomach. The added pressure meant the person felt fuller sooner and longer. An academic paper on his findings can be found at http://bit.ly/2e7QB76.

The pressure works to trigger brain indicators that the stomach is full. The person no longer feels hungry. A patented implantable food restriction device has since been developed for weight loss surgery. Before attending medical school, Dr. Gary Horndeski, a Bellesoma Method specialist, studied biomechanical engineering at Case Western. The engineering background helped him develop his patented device. A weight loss surgery that does not change the stomach with staples or a band could help thousands  of overweight people.
